Badamibagh Cantonment Board is an autonomous body under the control of Govt. of India, Ministry of Defence and discharges obligatory and discretionary functions as per the provisions of Cantonment Act, 2006. The Cantonment Act lays down both the mandatory and discretionary functions of the Board such as education, public health, sanitation, roads, street lighting and birth & death registration. The Badamibagh Cantonment is a class II Cantonment established in the year 1954, covering a total area of 1458.537 Acres including civil area of 313.50 Acres. As per Census figure of 2011, the total population in BB Cantt is 22,214. Before Independence, there were 81 Cantonments in the country, of which 56 accured to the Indian dominion after 15 Aug. 1947. Since then six stations have been declared as Cantts (including BB Cantt in 1954) taking the figure to 62. As on date, this is the only Cantonment in Northern Command. Badamibagh Cantonment Board is divided into seven wards. Presently, the Cantonment is governed by the Cantonments Act, 2006 and various Policy letters and Instructions of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India issued from time to time. However, the Board functions as a local municipal body, yet it is under the administrative control of Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE), New Delhi and Principal Director, Defence Estates, Northern Command, Jammu. The Cantonment Board consists of seven elected Members, two nominated Military Members, three Ex-officio Members (Officer Commanding the station, Executive Engineer and Health Officer), and one representative of the District Magistrate. An officer of the Indian Defence Estates Services is posted as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as well as the member secretary of the Board. The President Cantonment Board (PCB) is the Station Commander and presides the Board meetings of the Cantonment Board. The term of the elected Members is of 5 years. The Vice President is elected amongst the elected members. Firefighting, water supply in the Cantonment is being provide by the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. However, street lighting, birth & death registration, horticulture, primary education, health and sanitation are the prime departments of Badamibagh Cantonment Board. The various departments of Badamibagh Cantonment Board collectively operate to strengthen the civic infrastructure of the city.
